The Stark-Brown Scholarships

Public Trust is the Trustee of the estate of John Michael Stark-Brown. Mr Stark-Brown of Auckland, a former viticulturist, died on 11 April 1983. The scholarship fund was gifted through Mr Stark-Brown estate.

IMPORTANT: Please read information below to assist you in completing your application online. Applicants should carefully consider the criteria, which may be varied from time to time.

This Scholarship is offered to students who have previously attended Oratia Primary School and who are or will be attending tertiary study at Lincoln University or Massey University in the field of either Horticulture or Agriculture.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have attended Oratia Primary School for at least one year.
  • Applicants must be commencing full time study at either Massey University or Lincoln University.
  • The course of study to be either of an agricultural or horticultural nature and must be at least 1 year in duration.
  • Applicants must be commencing the course of study in 2025.

The successful applicant will receive a sum of $5,000 for one year. Successful applicants have the option of applying to the Trustee for a continuation of the scholarship annually until the course of study is complete.

Note

  • The value of the scholarship may differ from year to year and may also differ between applicants.

The Scholarship can be applied towards your Student Loan, Tertiary Fees (including course fees and Halls of Residence fees) or other expenses relating to your study (including Laptop, Stationery, travel expenses etc.). In most instances, payment will be made directly to the education provider on proof/confirmation of enrolment. If you require part of the payment for study related purchases, this will need to be itemised and clearly shown in your application.

The Scholarship cannot be used towards the purchase of a car or cell phone.

Application Requirements

  • The application form be completed and submitted via Public Trust online Granting System.
  • A reference from the applicant’s school Principal/Dean or current employer if applicable.
  • Full course details including annual cost are to be provided.
  • Past academic records and/or other achievements are to be provided.
  • School records of your attendance at Oratia Primary School – eg a School Report or a letter from the School Principal.

Continuation for future years.

  • To qualify for a scholarship in following years applicants must have a sound academic achievement in the previous year as confirmed by the university you attended.
  • Scholarship payments for future years are considered at the discretion of Public Trust, as Trustee and subject to satisfactory performance by the applicant in the preceding year. After the first year, and in order to receive further assistance, applicants are required to request continuation of scholarship to Public Trust before 31 January each year.
  • This request must be sent to funding@publictrust.co.nz and include:

           (a) a brief review of the previous year and exam results.

           (b) an outline of the intended study for the year ahead.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions:

  • Decisions regarding scholarships are made on the basis of information provided in the application forms, supporting material and other enquiries. The decision of the Trustee will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • All scholarships are conditional on the applicant being enrolled at the education provider in a course of study as outlined in the application.
  • Scholarships may be approved subject to certain conditions. In such circumstances the funds will normally be held by Public Trust until the conditions have been met.
  • The Trustee reserves the right to withhold the payment of any amounts due under the scholarship in the event of the misconduct of any person holding the scholarship.
  • The criteria, value and conditions of the Scholarships differ from year to year as the Trustee sees fit.

Important dates:

  • Applications are open from 9am on 1 October 2024 to 5pm on 29 November 2024.
  • Applicants will be advised of the outcome by 23 December 2024.

Late applications will not be accepted.

Step 3: Complete your application

  • The application is best viewed/completed on a non-mobile device.
  • Complete all of the required questions – mandatory questions are marked with an *.
  • Attach all required supporting documents.

Note: Our preferred format for attachments is PDF, Excel, Word or JPG.  Supporting materials cannot exceed 25MB in size, as files exceeding this will not upload.

Hint: Save your work regularly so it is not lost if you time out or lose your connection.

You can save your application at any stage and return to it later. Make sure the spell checker is switched on in your browser to prevent spelling errors.

Step 4: Review and submit your application

  • When you are satisfied with your application press the review button to ensure that all required sections of the application have been completed (you must do this before the submit button is enabled).
  • Submit your application.

Note: Once you have submitted your application no further editing or uploading of supporting documents is possible.

Step 5: What happens next?

  • You will receive an automated email confirming your submission with a copy of your application attached and information about how/when your Application will be assessed.  This will be sent to the email you used to register. 

If you do not receive a confirmation email then your Application has not been successfully submitted (don’t forget to check your spam email folder when looking for the email).
