2021 Scholarships

Public Trust is Trustee of the Estate of Doris Elizabeth Geraldine Swadling. The ‘Trust’ was established following Miss Swadling's death on the 22nd of June 1960. Under her Will, the residue of the estate is to be held in perpetuity to provide Scholarships in two separate categories.
Music Scholarships
The advancement of musical education to students who presently reside in the Taranaki Province, by the granting of Scholarships or Bursaries or other assistance, to enable or assist them to obtain musical training or education or by fostering in any other ways knowledge and appreciation for good music. Applicants must be under the age of 21 years.
Agriculture Scholarships
The granting of Scholarships, Bursaries or other assistance to students who presently reside in the Taranaki Province and who wish to become farmers, in order to obtain further education or training in the kind of knowledge or skills which should be useful for them in farming pursuits. Applicants must be under the age of 21 years.
Who is eligible: Students who are permanently living within the region administered by the Taranaki Regional Council. Students must be under the age of 21 years (as at the closing date of 30 September this year), who are New Zealand born or hold New Zealand Citizenship status. Students must be intending to advance their education next year with a recognised tertiary provider with a desire to take up a career in the music or agricultural/farming industry.
The Agricultural and Music Scholarships will be awarded to applicants balancing career-specific/ merit-based and financial need-based. A preference will be given to students from less well-off backgrounds.
How much funding is available: A number of Scholarships will be awarded for each category. Each Scholarship will be valued between $2,000 and $5,000 and will be awarded for one year only. There is no ability to request a continuation of the Scholarship in future years.
What can the Scholarship be used for: Scholarships can be applied towards your Student Loan, Tertiary Fees (including course fees and Halls of Residence fees) or other expenses relating to your study (including laptop, stationery, travel expenses, etc). It is the preference of the Trustee to have payments made to a provider rather than to an individual.
The Scholarship cannot be used towards the purchase of a car or cell phone.
How to apply: Complete the application form via Public Trust online Granting System ‘Smarty Grants’. A full application will require you to fill in the form and upload the required support documents. You can save the form as you go and log back in at any time to complete and submit before 5pm on the 30th of September.
