2021 Scholarships

IMPORTANT: Please read the information below to assist you in completing your application online.

Applicants should carefully consider the criteria which may be varied from time to time.

Public Trust is Trustee of the Estate of Doris Elizabeth Geraldine Swadling. The ‘Trust’ was established following Miss Swadling's death on the 22nd of June 1960.  Under her Will, the residue of the estate is to be held in perpetuity to provide Scholarships in two separate categories.

Music Scholarships

The advancement of musical education to students who presently reside in the Taranaki Province, by the granting of Scholarships or Bursaries or other assistance, to enable or assist them to obtain musical training or education or by fostering in any other ways knowledge and appreciation for good music. Applicants must be under the age of 21 years.  

Agriculture Scholarships

The granting of Scholarships, Bursaries or other assistance to students who presently reside in the Taranaki Province and who wish to become farmers, in order to obtain further education or training in the kind of knowledge or skills which should be useful for them in farming pursuits. Applicants must be under the age of 21 years.

Who is eligible: Students who are permanently living within the region administered by the Taranaki Regional Council. Students must be under the age of 21 years (as at the closing date of 30 September this year), who are New Zealand born or hold New Zealand Citizenship status. Students must be intending to advance their education next year with a recognised tertiary provider with a desire to take up a career in the music or agricultural/farming industry.

The Agricultural and Music Scholarships will be awarded to applicants balancing career-specific/ merit-based and financial need-based. A preference will be given to students from less well-off backgrounds.

How much funding is available:  A number of Scholarships will be awarded for each category. Each Scholarship will be valued between $2,000 and $5,000 and will be awarded for one year only.  There is no ability to request a continuation of the Scholarship in future years.

What can the Scholarship be used for: Scholarships can be applied towards your Student Loan, Tertiary Fees (including course fees and Halls of Residence fees) or other expenses relating to your study (including laptop, stationery, travel expenses, etc). It is the preference of the Trustee to have payments made to a provider rather than to an individual.

The Scholarship cannot be used towards the purchase of a car or cell phone.

How to apply: Complete the application form via Public Trust online Granting System ‘Smarty Grants’. A full application will require you to fill in the form and upload the required support documents. You can save the form as you go and log back in at any time to complete and submit before 5pm on the 30th of September.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be New Zealand born or naturalised citizens and be under 21 years of age (as at the closing date of applications being 30 September this year). 
  • Permanently living within the region administered by the Taranaki Regional Council including New Plymouth, Hawera, Waitara, Stratford, Inglewood, Eltham, Opunake, Patea - at the time of submitting the application.
  • Applications must be from individuals only and the scholarships will only be awarded to suitable applicants.
  • Applicants who are intending to advance their education at a recognised tertiary provider such as but not limited to a University, Polytechnic, and or Training School and desire ultimately to take up a career in the music or farming industry.
  • The course of study must be for a minimum of one year (full-time) relating to the music or agriculture/farming industry either directly or indirectly.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

  • The Trustee’s decision is final.
  • Decisions regarding Scholarships are made on the basis of information provided in the application forms, supporting material and other enquiries.
  • All Scholarships are conditional on the applicant being enrolled at the named education provider in a course of study as outlined in the application.
  • Scholarships may be approved subject to certain conditions. In such circumstances the funds will normally be held by Public Trust until the conditions have been met.

The decision of the Trustee is final and no further discussion will be entered into.

Important dates

  • Applications are open from 1 September to 5pm on 30th of September annually.
  • Applicants will be advised of the outcome by the 29th of January the year following.

Late applications will not be accepted.

Step 3: Complete your Application

  • Attach all required supporting documents.

Note: Our preferred format for attachments is PDF, Excel or Word.  Supporting materials cannot exceed 25MB in size, as files exceeding this will not upload.

Step 4: Review and submit your Application

  • When you are satisfied with your application press the review button to ensure that all required sections of the application have been completed (you must do this before the submit button is enabled).
  • Submit your application.

Note: Once you have submitted your application no further editing or uploading of supporting documents is possible.

Step 5: What happens next?

  • You will receive an automated email confirming your submission with a copy of your application attached and information about how/when your Application will be assessed.  This will be sent to the email address you used to register. 

If you do not receive a confirmation email then your Application has not been successfully submitted (remember to check your spam email folder when looking for the email).
