Helen Margaret Robertson was born in 1930 in South Canterbury. She trained as a teacher in Christchurch, eventually becoming a School Inspector specialising in science. She married Graham Robertson in the mid-1980s and moved to Levin to retire. By this time Mrs Robertson had developed Multiple Sclerosis. In 1992 Mrs Robertson established the Helen Graham Charitable Trust, the name of the Trust being a combination of her own and her husband's first names. Mrs Robertson died in 1998.

Who is eligible?

  • Current students of Horowhenua College, Waiopehu College, Manawatu College or Otaki College.
  • Applicants must be intending to advance their education in 2021 at an appropriate tertiary education provider and have a desire to take up a career in either horticulture, forestry, fishing, veterinary or environmental science.
  • The study must be started in the academic year of following the application.
  • Student must be intending to study in the Primary Industries field which must include papers pertaining to either horticulture, forestry, fishing, veterinary or environmental science.
  • The definition of Primary Industries field will be determined by the Trustee but is intended to have wide meaning.

The Helen Graham Primary Industries Scholarship will be awarded in consideration of balancing career-specific/ merit-based and financial need-based principles.

How much funding is available:  A single Scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded for one year only.  There is no ability to request a continuation of the Scholarship in future years.

What can the Scholarship be used for: The Scholarship can be applied towards your Student Loan, tertiary fees (including course fees and Halls of Residence fees) or other expenses relating to your study (including laptop, stationery, travel expenses etc). It is the preference of the Trustee to have payment made to a tertiary education provider or service provider rather than an individual.

The Scholarship is conditional on you being enrolled at the education provider in a course of study as outlined in your application. The Scholarship cannot be used towards the purchase of a car or cell phone.

How to apply: Complete the Application Form via Public Trust online Granting System ‘Smarty Grants’. A full application will require you to complete the form and upload the required supporting documents. This includes providing academic details, proposed course of study, financial information and providing various supporting documents. You can save the form as you go and log back in at any time to complete. The application will need to be submitted before 5pm on closing date being 30 September 2021.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

  • Public Trust is the Trustee for the Helen Graham Charitable Trust.  The following terms and conditions are applicable to all applications and may be varied from time to time by Public Trust.  
  • The value of the Scholarship will be decided by the Trustee and the Advisory Panel and may differ annually.
  • All applications are considered by the Trustee and the Advisory Panel. The decision of the Trustee is final and no further discussion will be entertained.
  • Decisions regarding Scholarships are made on the basis of information provided in the application form, supporting material and other enquiries.
  • All Scholarships are conditional on the applicant being enrolled at the education provider in a course of study as outlined in the application.
  • Scholarships may be approved subject to certain conditions. In such circumstances the funds will normally be held by Public Trust until the conditions have been met.
  • Successful applicants will be required on the completion of their upcoming course year to provide the Trustee with an accountability report by 31 March 2023. This Accountability Report will provide a brief review of the previous year and an outline of the year of study ahead or career step. Previous year examination results must also be included in the Report.
  • The Trustee reserves the right to withhold the payment of any amounts due under the Scholarship in the event of misconduct or change of circumstances of any person holding the Scholarship.

The decision of the Trustee is final and no further discussion will be entertained.

Important dates

  • Applications are open from 9am on 1 August 2021 and close at 5pm on 30 September 2021.
  • Applicants will be advised of the outcome by the 30 November 2021 unless advised prior of a change of date.

Late applications will not be accepted

The applicant acknowledges that the information supplied in the application may be made available to other parties in the course of enquiries regarding applications or in publishing the result of the Scholarship. Personal information collected will be held by Public Trust for the purpose of assessing applications for the Helen Graham Primary Industries Scholarship. Individuals have the right of access to, and correction of personal information held about them.

Step 3: Complete your Application

The application is best viewed/completed on a non-mobile device.

Attach all required supporting documents.

All attachments must be attached as PDF, Excel or WORD format.

Supporting materials cannot exceed 25MB in size, as files exceeding this will not upload.

Hint: Save your work regularly so it is not lost if you time out or lose your connection.

You can save your application at any stage and return to it later. Make sure the spell-checker is switched on in your browser to prevent spelling errors.

Step 4: Review and submit your Application

When you are satisfied with your application press the ‘Review’ button to ensure that all required sections of the application have been completed (you must do this before the ‘Submit’ button is enabled).

Remember to submit your application.

Note: Once you have submitted your application no further editing or uploading of supporting documents is possible.

Step 5: What happens next?

You will receive an automated email confirming your submission with a copy of your application attached and information about how/when your application will be assessed.  This will be sent to the email you used to register. 

If you do not receive a confirmation email then your Application has not been successfully submitted (remember to check your spam email folder when looking for the email).
